The Trip
This unique tour of Bolivia is being organized to support Shine A Light, one of the most innovative and successful non-profit organizations working with youth in Latin America. A portion of the trip cost will go directly to the programs of Shine A Light as they work to alleviate poverty through creativity. (Learn more about Shine A Light here.)
We will meet in La Paz, Bolivia’s capital, where we will spend three days exploring the city, the surrounding countryside, in the community of El Alto, where teenagers are using theatre and television as an instrument of social change. This is an opportunity to experience Bolivia’s modern indigenous culture; a chance most tourists never have. Our time in the altiplano will also include visits to the famed azure Lake Titicaca and the first capital of the Andean world, the huge ruins of Tiwanaku. After our days in La Paz we will fly to the upper Amazonian community of Rurrenabaque where we will voyage up river by boat to the comfortable Chalalan Lodge, a model of community based eco-tourism. Located in Madidi National Park, Chalalan is in the heart of one of the most diverse protected areas in the world. Our four days of exploring the rich Amazonian rainforest will not soon be forgotten.
The trip will be guided by the Executive Director of Shine A Light, Kurt Shaw and his brother, naturalist guide, wildlife biologist, and photographer David Shaw. Both have extensive experience living, working, and traveling in Latin America. Additionally we will utilize local expertise by working with indigenous guides.
